What champion should I main?
Pick a champion that converts commitment into rank, then stay on it. The numbers on all 173 champions are on the Best Champions To Main list; the current top five are Rek'Sai, Bard, Zoe, Nidalee and Taliyah. The other half of the answer matters just as much: if you already love a champion, main that one. Enjoying the game keeps you queuing, and games played is what actually makes you better.

What the numbers say
Most tier lists tell you what is strong this patch, which changes every two weeks and never helped anyone pick a champion to stick with. A better question: when players commit to this champion, do they actually reach the top? That can be counted. Take every Challenger and Grandmaster main in Korea, Europe West and North America, divide by how many games the whole world plays of that champion, and adjust for bans.
The results are lopsided. Malphite is played over 900,000 times a patch and has exactly one high elo main across all three regions. Rek'Sai is played 86,741 times and has seventeen. Per game played, that is roughly 180 times the rate of conversion. Popularity is not viability; most of the champions everyone plays convert almost nobody.

The concept: Commitment converts, but only somewhere
Maining works because repetition turns decisions into habits. The same clears, the same matchups, the same fights, until the reads come free and your attention goes to the map instead of your buttons. Every champion you add to your pool divides those reps. That is the case for one champion, or at most a small pool with one main.
But the data says where you commit matters. A champion that a million people play is a champion your opponents already understand, and the crowd drags conversion down. The champions that reward the hours are the ones few people bother to learn. That is what the list measures, and it is also why it is a comparison and not a promise: it tells you where committed players end up, not your personal odds.
One honest caveat, and then the rule. The data starts at Master and counts accounts rather than people, so treat the thin end gently. And the rule that beats the whole list: if you love a champion, play it. This page is for players who have not picked yet.
